Jigawa govt inaugurates c’ttee for child protection law

The Jigawa State Government has inaugurated the state’s child protection implementation committee.

Inaugurating the committee in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital on Wednesday, the Secretary to the State Government, Abdulkadir Fanini, said the setting up of the committee was to ensure proper implementation of child protection law in the state.

Fanini, who was represented by the Jigawa State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Yelwa Da’u, said children’s rights are being violated, “which is why utmost attention from government and other stakeholders is needed to ensure the rights of the voiceless children are protected.”

The SSG urged the committee members to discharge their assignment diligently and ensure proper implementation of the child protection law in the state.

In her remarks, the child protection manager, UNICEF Kano office, Amelia Allan, appreciated Jigawa State Governor, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, and the state House of Assembly for ensuring the passage of the child protection bill into law.

“The passage of child protection bill into law is just the beginning of what has to be done to ensure children in Jigawa enjoy right to survival, development, protection, and participation.

“The implementation of the law is critical as it translates the government into action to track the progress it makes in improving the lives of its children,” Allan said.

She stated that almost on daily basis across the world, including Jigawa State, children suffer violations, requiring access to services that will guarantee their rights and well-being.

She, however, said the committee as a coordination platform will serve as a key and sustainable mechanism to promote coordination between critical stakeholders, including government and civil society organisations, and law enforcement agencies to ensure integrated and holistic services are provided for children.
