The Jigawa State Government is set to hold an emergency meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities at Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, over the union’s threat to embark on industrial action.
The meeting is part of efforts to resolve grievances raised by ASUU-SLUK and prevent a disruption of academic activities in the state’s tertiary institutions.
Commissioner for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Isa Yusuf Chamo, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing journalists in Dutse on the government’s response to resolutions issued by the union on September 1, 2026.
Chamo said Governor Umar Namadi’s administration remained committed to resolving disputes with university workers through dialogue, mutual understanding and due process.
He said the government would not allow disagreements with staff unions to undermine teaching, learning and research.
According to the commissioner, the threat of industrial action may have been fuelled largely by communication gaps and differing interpretations of issues between the government and the union.
Addressing a recent agreement forwarded by the National Universities Commission, Chamo said the state government received the document about two weeks ago and was still examining its provisions.
He explained that the financial and administrative consequences of implementing the agreement required careful assessment to ensure compliance with relevant laws, government procedures and available budgetary resources.
Chamo said the governor had directed his ministry to review the document and explore lawful and practical options for addressing the concerns raised by ASUU.
The emergency meeting is expected to bring together vice-chancellors of the state’s two universities, the Accountant-General, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology and representatives of ASUU.
The commissioner said the discussions would focus on reconciling the positions of both sides and reaching workable solutions capable of restoring and sustaining industrial harmony.
Chamo also addressed concerns surrounding the 0.7 per cent allocation approved for the newly established Jigawa State University of Medical and Allied Health Sciences.
He said the allocation followed all necessary legal and administrative procedures, adding that the State Executive Council and the State House of Assembly had approved the arrangement.
Beyond the industrial dispute, the commissioner said the government was implementing projects aimed at improving infrastructure and learning conditions at Sule Lamido University.
He listed the upgrading of internal roads and the provision of a dependable solar-powered electricity system among the projects being undertaken at the institution.
Chamo reiterated the government’s willingness to engage university unions and managements through dialogue, saying maintaining stability in the tertiary education sector remained essential to improving academic activities across the state.
