Jonathan: Over 50% of those urging me to run for president don’t have PVCs

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says more than 50 per cent of Nigerians calling on him to contest the 2027 presidential election do not have Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Jonathan said this on Thursday while addressing supporters and youth groups in Abuja who urged him to join the 2027 presidential race.

“If I ask how many of you have your voter cards now, probably 50 per cent of you don’t even have your voter’s card. And you’re asking me to go and contest the election,” he said.

The former president, therefore, urged young Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process by obtaining their PVCs and voting during elections.

“It’s only patriotic citizens that build their nations. Unpatriotic citizens will destroy their nation, take the money anywhere to enjoy their lives. So, you must be patriotic,” Jonathan stated.

Jonathan stressed the need for peaceful and credible elections, noting that such conditions would encourage competent citizens to participate in politics.

“The key thing we need in this country is peace. As young people, you must continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections because if we don’t have peaceful and credible elections, most good citizens will not want to get involved in politics,” he said.

Jonathan also enjoined youths to remain actively involved in democratic processes, particularly by exercising their voting rights.

“And as youths, you must continue to be fully involved in the electoral process, especially your right to vote,” he added.

The former president further noted that he had observed elections in more than 14 African countries, stressing the importance of strengthening democracy across the continent.

Speaking on calls for him to return to active politics, Jonathan said: “Presidential race is not a computer game, but I heard you, and I will consult widely.”
