A Sharia Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, has been asked to compel a 27-year-old woman, Fatima Lawal, to get married following a suit filed by her father, Lawal Hamisu.
Hamisu, a father of 11, told Shari’a Court II through his counsel, H.B. Debo, that his daughter had completed her Higher National Diploma (HND) but had yet to settle down despite being of marriageable age.
He alleged that although Fatima had several admirers, she had not presented any serious suitor to the family. He further claimed that her mother had influenced the children against him and urged the court to direct his daughter to bring forward a suitable suitor so the marriage could proceed.
In her defence, Fatima told the court that she was not opposed to marriage but currently had no serious suitor, explaining that none of the men who had shown interest in her had formally proposed.
Presiding Judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, described the matter as a sensitive family dispute and said he would meet separately with both the father and daughter to better understand the issues before making a decision.
The case was adjourned until August 3 for further proceedings.
