Kaduna govt seeks community-based solutions to insecurity

Kaduna State Government has reiterated commitment to a bottom-up approach towards addressing insecurity and to strengthen peace process in the state.

The government stated that the present approach takes cognise of the peculiar problem of each local government, instead of a blanket approach of solving every problem.

The Kaduna State Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr James Kanyip, made this known while addressing newsmen in Kaduna on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.

Kanyip disclosed that he embarked on an assessment tour of the security situation in Kaduna State to hear directly from the people affected.

Kanyip said the tour was a shift towards a more direct community engagement in addressing security challenges, adding that the engagement covered Giwa and Igabi Local Government Areas of Kaduna State.

The commissioner noted that he aims to gather first hand information from communities affected by security concerns, to present it to Governor Uba Sani for prompt action.

He added that this hands-on approach will enable him to understanding local security dynamics, saying: “I feel that I should not be an armchair commissioner who just waits for reports.

Insecurity: Uba Sani recommends Kaduna model to other states

“The initiative brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including local government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and women’s organisations.

“Kaduna State Government recognises the importance and role of local leaders and other stakeholders in building and sustaining peace.

“Through these interactions, we will gather valuable information that will help us in tackling the challenges we are facing.”

The commissioner adding that the information would aid security agencies in their operations.

Kanyip stated: “This initiative represents a significant shift in the state’s security management approach, prioritising direct community engagement and localised solutions over centralised decision-making.

“Security is a collective responsibility which includes parents, women, youths, traditional rulers, and local authorities all have roles to play.”
