The Kano State House of Assembly has dissolved all the five newly created emirate councils in the state.
The House dissolved the emirate councils during plenary in Kano on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
The Kano State Emirates Council Amendment Bill was considered on the floor of the House after scaling second and third reading on Thursday morning.
With the amendment, all five new emirate councils were abolished leaving only the Kano Emirate.
Deputy Speaker Muhammad Butu said repealing the law that divided the Kano Emirate into five separate entities would help “revive the lost glory of Kano”.

“The division of Kano Emirate into five reduced the capacity and dignity of the state at the national level,” Butu said.
Also speaking, Majority Leader Lawan Dala said the emirate council served as a custodian of culture which was distorted by the creation of the four additional emirates.
“The commissioner for local governments will serve as the overseer,” Dala added.
The House also adopted a motion to create a new second-class emirate council in the state.
The lawmakers had sponsored the motion for repealing of the law which former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and current National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) assented to on December 5, 2019, and created four additional emirates afterwards.
Ganduje later dethroned Muhammadu Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano.
