The Kano Zonal chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has condemned what it described as the partial implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the union.
Zonal Coordinator, Abdullahi Muhammad, made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing a press conference at Bayero University Kano’s old campus.
He accused some vice chancellors of public universities of either partially implementing or completely ignoring the salary component of the agreement.
According to him, the optimism that followed the unveiling of the deal in January 2026 is gradually fading due to delays and inconsistencies in implementation.
“Our concern arises from the failure of the government to constitute the implementation monitoring committee, which was meant to prevent bureaucratic delays and ensure compliance,” he said.
Muhammad noted that the agreement was being executed in a fragmented and poorly coordinated manner, with only a few state governments adopting its provisions.
He also alleged that administrators of federal universities had selectively applied aspects of allowances, including earned academic allowances and professorial benefits, rather than fully integrating them into the consolidated salary structure as agreed.
The union further linked the slow pace of implementation to delays in establishing the proposed National Research Council, another key component of the agreement.
ASUU called on both federal and state governments to honour the agreement in full to maintain stability in the university system.
Muhammad warned that continued neglect of the agreement could disrupt the academic calendar, adding that union members’ patience was being stretched.
He reaffirmed ASUU’s commitment to ensuring that its members benefit from the outcomes of negotiations that spanned from 2017 to 2025, while urging the government to act promptly to avoid industrial unrest in public universities.
