The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) has intercepted 419 cartons of expired agricultural chemicals in the Kano metropolis and sealed the warehouse where the products were being kept.
The council said the discovery was made along Club Road following intelligence that expired agrochemicals had been stockpiled at the premises.
KCPC Executive Secretary, Dr Ibrahim Garba-Muhammad, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Saturday by the council’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Jamilu Mustapha.
Garba-Muhammad said the operation was prompted by information suggesting that there was an attempt to tamper with the expired products before putting them back into circulation.
He said the council’s officials recovered the chemicals and immediately sealed the facility to prevent further movement of the products.
“The raid was carried out following credible intelligence indicating that the expired chemicals had been stockpiled at the location,” he said.
He added that the premises would remain sealed as investigations progressed and legal action was initiated against those responsible.
The executive secretary said the seizure formed part of the council’s efforts to keep dangerous and substandard products away from consumers across the state.
He warned against the circulation of expired or adulterated products, stressing that the council would continue to take measures to protect the health and safety of residents.
Garba-Muhammad appealed to members of the public, traders and business owners to report suspicious products and activities to the council through its designated channels.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist authorities in identifying persons involved in the distribution of unsafe products.
The executive secretary appreciated the Kano State Government for supporting the council’s consumer protection activities and assured residents that the agency would intensify efforts to prevent hazardous products from reaching the market.
