Kano court acquits tricycle driver accused of murder

A Kano State High Court has acquitted a commercial tricycle driver, Imran Mustapha, who was standing trial for allegedly causing the death of Alhaji Muhammad Mustapha.

Justice Adam Abdullahi, who presided over the case at the court on Miller Road, discharged Mustapha after ruling that the prosecution failed to prove the murder charge beyond reasonable doubt.

The Kano State Government had charged the defendant under Section 221 of the Penal Code. Mustapha pleaded not guilty to the allegation.

The case followed an incident at a filling station where the prosecution alleged that Mustapha’s tricycle struck the deceased’s vehicle.

According to the prosecution, Muhammad followed Mustapha after the incident and an argument ensued. It further alleged that Mustapha later drove into the deceased, causing injuries that led to his death.

Six witnesses testified for the prosecution during the trial, while the defence presented Mustapha as a witness in his own case.

After considering the evidence and arguments from both sides, the court found that the prosecution had not established the case to the required legal standard and consequently acquitted Mustapha.

Prosecution counsel, Usman Abdullahi, said the government was dissatisfied with the judgment and would appeal the decision.
