Kano moves to boost governance through digital media

The Kano State Government has unveiled a new Digital Multimedia Department under the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs as part of efforts to modernise government communication, improve transparency and deepen engagement with citizens.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, announced the initiative on Monday during an event at the Audu Bako Secretariat in Kano.

Waiya described the department as a major reform aimed at bridging communication gaps between the government and the public in an increasingly digital era.

According to him, the department was established following extensive consultations that revealed the need for a dedicated platform to document government activities, showcase achievements, disseminate policies and counter misinformation through credible and timely communication.

“The Digital Multimedia Department will ensure that the voice of government remains visible, accessible and authoritative across all communication platforms,” he said.

He explained that the department would serve as a hub for content creation, digital engagement, online publishing and strategic media management.

The commissioner also inaugurated the Forum of Directors of Public Enlightenment and Public Relations Officers from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) across the state, saying the platform would foster collaboration, information sharing and coordination among government communicators.

As part of efforts to support the new forum, Waiya announced a donation of N1 million.

He commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for approving the establishment of the department, describing the move as a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to responsive governance and effective public communication under the Kano First Agenda.

Media professionals, communication scholars and officials who attended the event hailed the initiative, saying it would significantly strengthen Kano’s digital communication strategy and improve the dissemination of government information to residents.
