The Kano State Police Command has launched a special investigation into the death of a JSS 2 boarding student of St. Louis Secondary School, Kano.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, constituted the panel after receiving a petition from Nakudu Law Partners, legal representatives of the mother of the deceased student, Mrs. Nusaiba Rabi’u Dan Sheriff.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, the petition concerns the death of 13-year-old Maimuna Sani Salisu.
The statement said the Commissioner ordered that the matter be handled with urgency, transparency, and strict adherence to due process, in line with established policing standards that emphasise accountability, intelligence-led investigation, and respect for human rights.
The Special Investigation Panel will be headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, DCP Shehu Idris.
It added that officials from the Kano State Ministry of Justice have been included in the panel to provide legal oversight and ensure inter-agency collaboration during the investigation.
The petitioners raised concerns over conflicting accounts of the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. While the school reportedly attributed it to an asthma attack after she was late for morning prayers, the family alleged that other accounts suggested she may have been subjected to punishment by senior students, including flogging and prolonged kneeling for refusing to perform chores, which may have worsened her condition.
The family called for a thorough investigation to establish the true cause of death and ensure accountability.
The police assured the public that the investigation would be conducted in a transparent and impartial manner.
It also appealed to members of the school community and the public to provide useful information that could assist the probe, assuring that all submissions would be treated with strict confidentiality.
