The Kano State Government has expressed concern over the low turnout in the ongoing voter registration exercise across its 44 local government areas.
Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, who also chairs the state’s Mobilisation Taskforce on Voter Registration, disclosed that only 10,000 voters were registered in Kano during the first week of the exercise, which ran from August 18 to 24, 2025.
According to Waiya, the figure places Kano, Nigeria’s most populous state, in 18th position nationwide, despite over 1.3 million registrations recorded across the country within the same period.
In a statement shared on his verified Facebook page, Waiya described the development as unacceptable.
He stressed that the government has set a target of mobilising at least 10 million registered voters before the end of the exercise.
He noted that the state has begun engaging critical stakeholders, including civil society organisations (CSOs) and political groups, to explore creative strategies for driving mass participation.
“Our second engagement was with the Mawallafa Kwankwasiyya Association, where I emphasised the critical role of music, literature, and creativity in shaping public opinion and inspiring civic action, especially among the youth,” Waiya said.
He added that the group pledged to deploy every available platform to raise awareness and encourage registration.
On the part of civil society organisations, Waiya reiterated that the campaign was not political but a patriotic mission rooted in service, accountability, and commitment to strengthening democracy.
