Kano seals business over indecent social media adverts

The Kano State Censorship Board has shut down the premises of Kausar Unique Empire Ltd., popularly known as “Back to Back,” over allegations that it circulated indecent promotional content on social media.

The board said the enforcement action followed intelligence reports and complaints from residents who accused the business of using offensive language and explicit imagery in its online advertisements.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the board’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Sani-Sulaiman.

According to him, the advertisements contravened Kano State’s regulations on commercial promotions and were considered inconsistent with the state’s cultural and moral values.

He said the decision to seal the business was taken after authorities received multiple complaints from members of the public who expressed concern over the nature of the content and its possible influence on society.

Sani-Sulaiman warned businesses against using social media and other digital platforms to promote products through materials deemed offensive or contrary to public decency.

He said the board would continue to enforce regulations aimed at preventing the spread of objectionable content in both physical and online spaces.

The spokesperson also urged traditional medicine dealers and other entrepreneurs to ensure their advertising campaigns comply with existing laws and reflect accepted social and ethical standards.

He noted that the action was part of an ongoing crackdown on businesses found to be violating the state’s advertising guidelines, adding that the board would sustain its collaboration with relevant stakeholders to promote responsible advertising and uphold public morality.
