Kano varsity grants Emir Sanusi special admission to study law

Northwest University, Kano, has granted special admission to the 16th Emir of Kano, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, into its Faculty of Law, the institution announced on Thursday.

The approval, communicated in a letter dated January 12, 2026, was signed by Jafaru Sule Muhammad of the Directorate of Examinations, Admissions, and Records (DEAR) on behalf of the Registrar, Isyaku Adamu, and addressed to the Emir at Gidan Rumfa Palace, Kano.

According to the university, the admission was granted after Sanusi “satisfied the University requirements for special consideration.”

He has been admitted into the LL.B. Common Law and Shariah program at Level 200, effective from the 2024/2025 academic session.

The university noted that the special entry recognizes the Emir’s strong academic background.

Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, recently earned a PhD from a London university and holds multiple qualifications in economics, Islamic finance, and public policy.

The institution stressed that the admission is conditional on compliance with its rules and regulations, as outlined in the Northwest University Student Handbook.

The Emir has been directed to complete registration through relevant university units, including the Directorate of Examinations, Admissions and Records, ICT, Bursary, Faculty, Library, and Student Affairs Division.

Northwest University said the move reflects its commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning, emphasizing that the policy encourages continued scholarship irrespective of status or position.
