Kano woman dies hours after giving birth to quintuplets

A Kano mother, Hafsatu Yusuf, has died just hours after delivering quintuplets at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano.

Hafsatu, who gave birth to three boys and two girls around 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday through a caesarean section, passed away at about 1:00 a.m. on Thursday. Her husband, Malam Salisu Nafiu, confirmed the tragic development.

“She delivered the babies successfully in the afternoon, but we lost her in the early hours of today,” Nafiu told journalists. “It is a painful loss for our family.”

Nafiu, a tricycle rider, expressed gratitude for the safe arrival of the babies, noting that they are all alive and under close medical supervision. “The babies are stable and receiving proper care from the doctors,” he said.

Hafsatu’s delivery marked her ninth childbirth, a development that had initially brought joy to the family and the community before tragedy struck.

Medical personnel at the hospital have continued to give the newborns specialised attention to support their survival and healthy development. A hospital source said, “The babies are being monitored closely and are receiving all necessary medical support.”

In the wake of the incident, the Kano State Ministry of Health announced that the state government would承担 full responsibility for the medical care of the quintuplets.

According to a statement issued by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Nabilusi Abubakar Kofar Na’isa, the intervention is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen maternal and child health and reduce mortality rates across the state.

Residents have expressed mixed emotions over the development, describing it as a moment of profound joy and heartbreaking sorrow for the family.
