The Kebbi State Government has approved a six-month maternity leave for pregnant women in the state civil service to promote exclusive breastfeeding for newborns.
Governor Nasir Idris granted the approval during a meeting with UNICEF officials at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.
He noted that the state executive would soon forward a bill to the House of Assembly to formalize the policy through legislation.
Governor Idris also pledged additional support for UNICEF’s efforts to combat malnutrition in the state. He announced the immediate release of N261 million already captured in the state budget, and directed the finance ministry to disburse another N500 million to UNICEF for nutrition-related interventions.
The Head of UNICEF’s Sokoto Field Office, Mr. Michael Juma, commended the governor for his commitment, assuring that the funds would be used to provide essential nutrition supplies to tackle malnutrition in Kebbi State.
