Kebbi gives tertiary institutions seven buses to students’ mobility

The Kebbi State Government has distributed seven new 30-seater buses to tertiary institutions across the state to ease students’ transportation challenges.

Governor Nasir Idris handed over the buses to representatives of the beneficiary institutions and student leaders at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

The beneficiaries include the Federal University of Science and Technology, Aliero; Adamu Augie College of Education, Argungu; College of Advanced and Legal Studies, Yauri; Kebbi State College of Science and Technology, Jega; Kebbi State Polytechnic, Dakingari; Kebbi State College of Nursing, Birnin Kebbi; and Kaura Gwandu School of Nursing, Ambursa.

Idris said the intervention followed complaints from students and education stakeholders about difficulties with transportation.

“I received requests through the Commissioner, Special Adviser, and various leaders of the institutions that the students lack mobility, suggesting that government should provide buses to ease their suffering,” he said.

The governor urged student leaders to ensure the vehicles were used strictly for their intended purpose and not taken over by institutional management.

“The students need these vehicles more than the management, therefore let them be beneficiaries,” he said.

The governor also charged the student unions with ensuring proper maintenance of the buses to guarantee their long-term use.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Isa Abubakar-Tunga, disclosed that the state government had doubled the monthly allocation to tertiary institutions from N5 million to N10 million each.

He also said several academic programmes that previously lacked accreditation had secured accreditation under the current administration.

According to him, governing councils had also been constituted for all state tertiary institutions, except the newly established Kaura Gwandu School of Nursing.

Abubakar-Tunga commended the governor for what he described as sustained support for the education sector.
