A commercial bus driver in Lagos narrowly avoided prosecution after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency discovered cocaine and methamphetamine concealed inside a bottle presented to him as an energy drink parcel.

The NDLEA Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed the incident in a post on his X account on Sunday while warning commercial drivers and other parcel carriers against accepting packages without verifying their contents.

Babafemi said the driver had been given a bottle of Fearless energy drink in Lagos to deliver to Ondo State as a waybill package.

According to him, the driver assumed the bottle contained an ordinary energy drink until NDLEA operatives discovered that it had allegedly been used to conceal cocaine and methamphetamine.

The driver was subsequently taken into custody and could have faced prosecution over the drugs. However, Babafemi said he was spared after operatives traced and arrested the person who handed him the package.

“When they say don’t judge a book by its cover, it’s for a reason. A commercial bus driver spent some time in custody and would have ended in jail because he assumed a bottle of fearless energy drink given him as a waybill package in Lagos to deliver in Ondo State actually contains energy drink,” Babafemi said.

He warned that not everyone involved in similar situations might be as fortunate.

“Your own case may be devoid of such luck and you go in for it,” he added.

The NDLEA spokesman urged drivers, dispatch riders and others involved in transporting parcels to avoid accepting packages whose contents they cannot verify.

“Please avoid taking parcels you don’t know its content because possession makes you culpable, that’s the law,” he said.

The agency has repeatedly warned members of the public that ignorance of the contents of a package may not shield them from the consequences of possessing or transporting illicit drugs.

In a related development, the NDLEA recently arrested a 25-year-old businessman, Lovely Chukwulobelu, at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, over alleged possession of 72 wraps of cocaine intended for Portugal.

According to the agency, the suspect allegedly turned to drug trafficking to offset expenses incurred during his wedding.
