Trading on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) weakened during the week, with investors exchanging 3.166 billion shares valued at N155.02bn in 206,662 deals.
The figures represent a 32.48 per cent decline in volume and a 35.63 per cent drop in transaction value compared with the previous week, when 4.689 billion shares worth N240.82bn were traded in 261,198 deals.
Trading was conducted across four sessions following the Federal Government’s declaration of Thursday, October 1, 2026, as a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s Independence Day.
The reduced activity was accompanied by a decline in the benchmark NGX All-Share Index, which fell by 0.52 per cent to close at 250,808.27 points.
Market capitalisation also declined by 0.50 per cent to N162.84tn.
Despite the overall market decline, some sectoral indices recorded gains. The NGX Main Board Index rose by 0.08 per cent, while the Insurance Index gained 0.61 per cent.
The Oil & Gas Index increased by 0.05 per cent, while the NGX Growth Index recorded the biggest gain, rising by 1.85 per cent during the week.
The NGX Commodity Index remained unchanged, while other sectoral indices closed lower.
The Financial Services Industry dominated trading activity, accounting for 1.944 billion shares valued at N77.73bn across 92,035 deals.
The sector represented 61.41 per cent of total equity turnover by volume and 50.14 per cent by value.
The Investment Industry ranked second with 409.484 million shares worth N5.40bn traded in 1,444 deals, followed by the ICT Industry with 231.705 million shares valued at N9.61bn in 24,133 deals.
Fidelity Bank Plc, VFD Group Plc and Access Holdings Plc were the three most traded equities by volume.
Together, the stocks accounted for 1.343 billion shares worth N27.58bn in 15,771 deals, representing 42.42 per cent of total equity turnover volume and 17.79 per cent of the value traded.
Market breadth also weakened during the week, with 44 equities recording price gains, compared with 61 in the previous week.
Meanwhile, 37 equities declined, up from 32 previously, while 65 stocks closed unchanged compared with 63 in the preceding week.
The figures indicate a softer trading session on the NGX, with lower turnover, reduced market breadth and declines in both the All-Share Index and market capitalisation despite gains in selected sectors.
