Lagos summons DisCos, regulators over persistent blackouts

The Lagos State Government has summoned electricity regulators, distribution companies, power resellers and suppliers to address persistent electricity shortages and develop a roadmap for round-the-clock power supply across the state.

The government said the stakeholders would be expected to identify structural challenges affecting electricity generation, distribution, metering and alternative energy supply, and propose practical solutions to improve service delivery.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing ahead of the 2026 Lagos Energy Summit scheduled for November 10 to 12.

Ogunleye said the summit would provide a platform for stakeholders across the electricity value chain to confront persistent supply challenges and examine ways of accelerating the state’s energy ambitions.

He said discussions would focus on electricity sector reforms, energy efficiency, renewable energy, metering solutions and the development of alternative energy sources.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Ibilola Kasumu, said the summit would adopt a different approach by moving beyond policy speeches and presentations to address specific problems confronting the sector.

“This summit is going to be different from the last one. It is not just going to be a talk shop. We are going to bring real problems to the table and look for solutions from different experts in this sector,” she said.

Kasumu said the objective was to establish practical pathways towards reliable, round-the-clock electricity supply in Lagos, with the possibility of developing a model that could be replicated across the country.

Ogunleye also disclosed that the state government was holding discussions with the Federal Government to clarify their respective regulatory responsibilities and strengthen Lagos’s control over its energy infrastructure.

He identified compressed natural gas and electric vehicles as important components of the state’s clean-energy and transportation agenda.

The summit, themed, “Lagos Energy Evolution: Transforming the Future,” will also showcase youth-led clean-energy innovations, including projects and prototypes developed by secondary school students.

The government said the event would bring together public officials, private investors, energy experts, academics and innovators to explore investment opportunities and solutions for the state’s electricity challenges.
