LASTMA prevents major disaster as gas tanker overturns in Lagos

A major tragedy was averted in Lagos on Monday morning when operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) swiftly contained a serious accident involving a gas-laden tanker that overturned at Chisco, inward Victoria Island.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours, involved a Howo white tanker fully loaded with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cylinders.

Preliminary findings indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and block the main carriageway — a situation that posed an immediate risk of explosion and fire.

LASTMA officials quickly arrived at the scene, cordoned off the area, and secured the tanker to prevent leakage or ignition.

Their prompt action helped avert what could have been a catastrophic fire outbreak in the busy corridor.

Recognizing the danger, the agency’s Rescue and Emergency Unit activated a multi-agency response involving the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lekki Concession Company (LCC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

Through coordinated efforts, the situation was brought under control and normal traffic flow was restored within hours.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who was at the scene, commended his officers for their professionalism and courage, confirming that the overturned tanker was recovered using heavy-duty cranes and safety equipment.

“Our officers acted with precision and bravery.

“Their timely intervention prevented what could have been an unimaginable tragedy,” Bakare-Oki said.

“The recovery process was carried out with strict adherence to safety standards.”

To ease congestion, additional LASTMA officers were deployed to manage diversions.

“The main route from Chisco to Victoria Island was temporarily closed, with motorists redirected through the new coastal road and reconnected via Bar Beach until operations were completed.

Bakare-Oki also issued a strong warning to truck drivers and operators of articulated vehicles transporting hazardous materials to comply with safety regulations, maintain their vehicles regularly, and exercise extra caution, especially during wet weather.

He stressed that products such as gas, petrol, diesel, and kerosene must be transported under the highest safety standards to prevent disasters.

Reaffirming the Lagos State Government’s commitment to public safety, the LASTMA boss assured that the agency will continue working closely with other emergency and enforcement bodies to enhance traffic discipline, environmental safety, and rapid emergency response across the state.
