The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, has welcomed London-Lagos solo driver, Pelumi Nubi, to the institution’s campus in the Akoka area of Lagos State.
Ogunsola on Sunday, April 7, received Nubi, who embarked on a solo trip from London to Lagos by road on January 30, 2024.
Nubi’s father, Timothy Nubi, is a Professor in the Department of Estate Management at UNILAG.
He is also the Founder/National Coordinator of Ideal Habitat Initiative.
The UNILAG VC, however, described 28-year-old Nubi as a woman with an indomitable spirit, saying: “For Pelumi to leave London and spend hours on the road, she went through 17 countries. She embodies the Nigerian spirit. She is the second person to do it.

“Nigerians are courageous. She was not afraid of racism and things that might be on the way. I want all of us here to know that there is nothing you cannot do. All that is stopping you is in your mind.
“Queen Amina of Zaria took to war and conquered. Captain Chinyere Kalu was the first female pilot, among others. Pelumi has shown us that when the going gets tough, the tough gets going.”
Nubi had, while speaking with journalists at the Nigeria-Seme Border on her arrival in the country on Sunday morning, said the journey was lonely.
She said: I was very lonely; I missed my family and friends. I was shaken when I had an accident but I’m grateful it was just a temporary setback.
“I’m grateful for the encouragement and the rousing welcome given to me; I’m grateful for my parents and their unflinching support and prayers, I can’t thank them enough.
“I’m grateful for welcoming me, I’m grateful for all the encouragement.”
Nubi’s road manifest from London, the United Kingdom, took her through France and Spain into Africa through Morocco.
It indicates that she drove across Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and finally to Lagos, Nigeria.
