The chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Langai Ward, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, has been shot and injured in an attack by suspected gunmen.

The victim, identified as Alhaji Yakubu, was reportedly targeted in the shooting, according to a report by security analyst Zagazola Makama.

Preliminary information alleged that members of a Mwaghavul militia group were responsible for the attack. However, the identities of the assailants and the circumstances surrounding the shooting have yet to be independently established.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over security in Mangu, an area that has experienced recurring violence, cattle rustling and reprisals amid tensions between farming and herding communities.

The prolonged conflict has resulted in deaths, displacement and loss of livelihoods, while allegations of targeted attacks against civilians have further strained relations among communities.

Operation Rainbow and other security groups operating in the area have also faced allegations of misconduct, including claims of targeted attacks and cattle rustling involving the state-backed outfit. These allegations have not been independently verified.

The latest shooting has renewed calls for security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and prevent possible retaliatory attacks.

Further details on Yakubu’s condition and the circumstances of the attack were not immediately available.
