Man asks Kaduna Sharia court to recover wedding gifts from ex-fiancée

A Kaduna man, Abubakar Lukman, has approached a Shari’a Court in Magajin Gari, seeking an order compelling his former fiancée, Fatima Muhammad, to return items presented to her family during their marriage introduction.

Lukman told the court on Tuesday that preparations for the wedding had progressed with the involvement of both families before he decided to terminate the planned marriage.

According to him, his decision followed what he described as the discovery of certain habits by Muhammad that he said he could not accept in a wife.

“Both our parents were involved in the preparations for the wedding. But I later discovered certain habits my wife-to-be had that I cannot condone in a wife. I decided to call off the wedding,” he told the court.

The complainant is asking the court to direct Muhammad to return several items he said were provided during the marriage introduction.

The items listed included foodstuffs, an electric kettle, gas cylinder, floor rug, sweets, buckets and dates.

However, counsel to the defendant, Sani Sanusi, rejected Lukman’s claim, telling the court that the items in question had already been returned to him.

Presiding Judge Yakubu Abdullahi subsequently adjourned the case until September 25 to enable Lukman to present witnesses or other evidence to establish that the items were not returned.

The court will determine the matter based on the evidence presented at the next hearing.
