A 38-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly faking his own abduction in an attempt to extort N20 million from his family members in Anambra State.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Ikenga revealed that the man was apprehended in Rivers State by the personnel of the 302 Artillery Regiment of the Nigerian Army, Onitsha, Anambra State.
Ikenga said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, on August 15, staged his own kidnap and sent a text message to his family, demanding a ransom of N20 million for his supposed release.

The police spokesman noted that on September 15, the police formally received the suspect from the army for further investigation.
He stated: “The suspect allegedly staged his own kidnap to extort money from his family members.
“Acting on a technology-driven intelligence, he was arrested in his hideout in Rivers State.”
Ikenga assured the public of the police’s diligent investigation to ensure justice is served.
