The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man, Jacob Irewa, for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, on fire during a domestic dispute in Lokoja.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja, according to the command’s spokesperson, ASP Afusat Saliu.
Saliu said the victim sustained injuries and was receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele.
She said officers attached to the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, responded to a distress call and arrested Irewa at the scene.
According to the police, preliminary investigations showed that the dispute started after Irawo allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes without his consent.
The disagreement reportedly escalated when Irewa allegedly threatened his wife, siphoned petrol from his motorcycle and set her on fire.
“ In his statement to the police, the suspect admitted to setting his wife ablaze,” Saliu said.
The command said a detailed investigation was underway to establish the circumstances of the incident and gather additional evidence.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, condemned the alleged attack, describing it as “barbaric and unacceptable.”
Kankarofi reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for violence, particularly domestic violence, and urged residents to resolve disputes through lawful and peaceful means.
“The command will not condone any action capable of endangering lives,” he said.
Police said the suspect would be charged with attempted culpable homicide after investigations are concluded.
The command also urged members of the public to report cases of domestic abuse promptly to prevent disputes from escalating into violence.
