Gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo, has filed a N2 billion lawsuit against hip-hop artist, Obidiz Lawson, for defamation of character and unauthorised use of name and image secular music audio and video.
Chinwo filed the suit against Obidiz over his single released on February 10, 2023, and titled ‘Mercy Chinwo’.
The single also has the gospel singer’s picture as the cover image.
Obidiz, in the song, cited an example of a wayward, club girl, and mentioned Chinwo in the phrase.
“She dey share me the cake, but she no want commit. Mercy Chinwo for church, but for club na Cardi B sef,” the singer said in the song.

Reacting through her lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, the gospel singer, in a letter addressed to Obidiz and dated March 23, said the artist (Obidiz) made “derogatory and defamatory use of the name and image of Chinwo in secular music audio and video”.
The lawyer further asked Obidiz to desist from further use of Chinwo’s name and image.
The lawyer stated: “It came to our client’s rude shock that you recently released and published a song titled ‘Mercy Chinwo’ containing disparaging and derogatory lyrics.
“That you take down or cause to be taken down, the song titled ‘Mercy Chinwo’ which you published on all music digital platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, and any other platform whereby you made such publication.”
Olajengbesi also directed Obidiz to promptly comply with the singer’s demands, “failure upon which the full machinery of the law will be set in motion against you including approaching the Court of Law to award damages against you to the tune of N2,000,000,000.00 (Two Billion Naira) in a favour of our client.”
