MTN pays N879bn in taxes as revenue, profit surge

MTN Nigeria remitted a total of N878.7bn in taxes, levies, and duties to federal and state governments in 2025, marking a 15 per cent increase from the previous year.

The figure, disclosed in the company’s 2025 Sustainability Report, underscores the growing role of large private-sector firms in supporting Nigeria’s push to boost non-oil revenue and strengthen tax collection.

MTN’s tax contributions have risen steadily in recent years—from N543.9bn in 2023 to N764bn in 2024—reflecting a cumulative growth of about 62 per cent over the two-year period.

The increase coincided with a strong financial rebound, as the telecom giant posted a profit after tax of N1.11tn in 2025, recovering from earlier foreign exchange losses. Revenue also climbed by 54.8 per cent to N5.20tn, while operating profit surged to N2.08tn from N778.2bn.

The N878.7bn paid in 2025 covered company income tax, value-added tax, spectrum fees, import duties, levies to the Nigerian Communications Commission, and contributions under infrastructure tax credit schemes.

As part of its infrastructure commitments, MTN invested N202.8bn under the Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme for the reconstruction of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. It also advanced work on the Rural and Urban Terrestrial Infrastructure scheme, which reached 50 per cent completion after securing an additional N23bn tax credit to expand telecom access in underserved areas.

The company further strengthened its local economic impact, with 62 per cent of its procurement spending directed to Nigerian suppliers in 2025, up from 59.6 per cent the previous year, supporting sectors such as construction, logistics, software, and power.

Operationally, MTN expanded its network to 2,087 base stations nationwide, while its subscriber base grew to 85.4 million by the third quarter of 2025. Active data users rose to 51.1 million, driven by smartphone penetration of 65.1 per cent.

During the year, the company also renewed its 800MHz spectrum licence for another 10 years, extending its validity to December 2034.
