Mupita urges economic integration amid rising migration tensions

MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Ralph Mupita, has called for greater economic integration and social solidarity across Africa amid growing tensions triggered by anti-immigrant protests in South Africa.

Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg, Mupita highlighted the pan-African nature of the telecommunications company, noting that most of its earnings come from markets outside South Africa.

“MTN makes less than 20 per cent in South Africa and makes 80 per cent of our earnings elsewhere,” he said.

His remarks come as protests in South Africa have sparked outrage in other African countries, with some calling for retaliatory actions against South African businesses operating across the continent.

Mupita argued that targeting multinational companies based solely on their country of origin overlooks their significant contributions to local economies across Africa.

He stressed that cross-border businesses have become vital drivers of economic growth and integration, helping to connect African economies despite political and social challenges.

In a post on his LinkedIn page ahead of a migration dialogue hosted by the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation, the MTN chief said Africa’s progress depends on unity and respect for shared values.

“The future of Africa depends on greater social solidarity, increasing economic integration and the observance of the rule of law,” he stated.

According to him, protecting pan-African businesses from nationalist tensions and promoting economic cooperation are essential to building a resilient and globally competitive continent.
