Naira scarcity: Protesters raze, destroy banks in Edo, Delta, 3 killed

Protesters, on Wednesday, set ablaze two commercial banks in Benin, the Edo State following a protest against the scarcity of naira notes in the state.

It was gathered that three people were killed after the protesters, wielding sticks, stones, and other weapons, attacked and destroyed a First Bank branch in the state capital.

Some protesters also razed two commercial banks in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State.

Confirming the incident, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, said the protesters also set ablaze two vehicles.

Edafe disclosed that no fewer than nine suspects have been arrested by the police.

“In UDU LGA of Delta State, some unguided youths/miscreants in the name of protest have set two banks and two vehicles ablaze.

“We have arrested nine suspects so far. Some persons will still call this protest,” the police spokesperson tweeted on his Twitter account on Wednesday.

The Supreme Court, on Wednesday, adjourned the case on the naira swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) till February 22, 2023, for hearing the suits filed against the Federal Government (FG).

The Justice John Okoro-led nine-member panel joined the Attorneys General of Katsina, Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti, Cross River, and Sokoto states as co-plaintiffs in the suit challenging the naira redesign policy.

The Attorneys General of Edo and Bayelsa states were joined as co-respondents.

The seven states in their respective motions for joinder pitched their tents with Kaduna, Zamfara, and Kogi states that initially ignited the suit.
