NECO releases 2026 BECE results, fixes date for resit exam

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

NECO Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, announced this via a statement issued on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

Sani disclosed that 186,291 candidates registered for the examination.

Sani said the candidates were drawn from the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and five foreign countries.

He noted that the examination commenced on April 20 and was concluded on April 30, 2026.

The NECO spokesperson said the results were released following the successful conclusion of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at the council’s headquarters in Minna, the capital of Niger State.

He said the meeting was spearheaded by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, represented by the Director of Basic Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Folake Olatunji-David.

Sani added that the award committee meeting was also attended by secondary school principals from across the country as well as members of NECO management.

Sani said the committee also approved July 22 and July 23, 2026, for the conduct of the BECE resit examination in Mathematics and English Studies.

He explained that the resit examination was designed for candidates with conditional deficiencies in Mathematics, English Studies, or both.

The NECO spokesman, however, said the examination would provide affected candidates with an opportunity to remedy the deficiencies and obtain the certification required for admission and placement into SSS I without repeating a full academic year.
