Nigeria ends Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as Africa’s top team

Nigeria emerged as Africa’s highest-ranked nation at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after finishing seventh on the overall medals table with 24 medals at the end of the competition in Glasgow.

Team Nigeria amassed 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals across athletics, weightlifting, para-sports and judo to secure its place among the top-performing nations at the Games.

Australia dominated the medals table with 171 medals, including 70 gold, while England placed second with 110 medals. Canada finished third, ahead of India, hosts Scotland and New Zealand.

Nigeria’s campaign was driven largely by outstanding performances on the track and in the field.

Samuel Ogazi became the first Nigerian to win Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s 400 metres after crossing the finish line in 44.25 seconds.

Ezekiel Nathaniel also made history by claiming Nigeria’s first-ever men’s 400m hurdles title at the Games.

In the field events, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi delivered another breakthrough, winning Nigeria’s maiden Commonwealth gold medal in the men’s shot put, while Ruth Usoro secured silver in the women’s long jump.

Udodi Onwuzurike added a silver medal in the men’s 200 metres, improving on his sixth-place finish at the Birmingham 2022 Games.

Ella Onojuvwevwo ended Nigeria’s 32-year medal drought in the women’s 400 metres by claiming bronze, while world record holder Tobi Amusan finished third in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Nigeria also celebrated success in the relay events. The mixed 4x400m team won bronze in the event’s first appearance at the Commonwealth Games, while the men’s 4x100m relay team was upgraded to bronze after Canada’s disqualification.

The country’s medal haul was further boosted by strong performances from its weightlifters, judokas and para-athletes, underlining Nigeria’s competitiveness across multiple sporting disciplines.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games attracted athletes from more than 74 nations and territories competing in 215 medal events across 10 sports, with organisers reporting over 630,000 spectators during the 11-day competition.
