Nigerian Army to open new training depot in Abakaliki – COAS

The Federal Government has approved the establishment of a new Nigerian Army Training Depot in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, to boost the Army’s combat capacity through the training of more soldiers.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shuaibu, announced this on Saturday during the Passing Out Parade of the 89 Regular Recruit Intake at the Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria, where he served as the Reviewing Officer.

Shuaibu said President Bola Tinubu approved the creation of the new facility, which will serve as the third Army training depot in the country, alongside the existing depots in Zaria and Oshogbo.

According to him, the Abakaliki depot will soon commence operations and will play a key role in the Army’s plan to increase troop strength and improve operational effectiveness nationwide.

He explained that training programmes across the three depots would be harmonised to ensure uniform standards, stronger partnerships and the acquisition of relevant military skills required for modern operations.

The Army chief congratulated the newly graduated recruits, describing their successful completion of training as a testament to their dedication, resilience and commitment.

“You have answered one of the highest calls to national service. You are joining the Army at a time when the country is confronted with multiple security challenges, and you must see yourselves as part of the solution,” Shuaibu said.

He urged the soldiers to uphold selfless service, discipline and professionalism throughout their military careers.

Shuaibu also disclosed that following the completion of the training cycle in Zaria, the Passing Out Parade for recruits at the Depot Nigerian Army, Oshogbo, would be held next week.

However, 3,500 recruits began the training programme on July 1, with 3,439 successfully completing the exercise.
