NLC orders Osun LG workers to withdraw services over political crisis

The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed civil servants in Local Government Areas across the state to withdraw their services, following the political crisis in the state.

The Osun NLC Chairman, Christopher Arapasopo, made this known via a statement on Monday, February 24, 2025.

The statement read: “The Osun State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) strongly affirm her earlier release notifying all Local Government Area Workers in the State to withdraw their services as a result of the political upheaval within their workplaces, while continuing in their prayers for the state.

“This release further reiterates that our members safety at work is of high priority and we will not allow our members to work in an atmosphere of insecurity.

“The Osun State Council of the NLC remains resolute in its commitment to defending the rights and interests of workers and the masses.

“We shall not be cowed or intimidated by these desperate attempts to silence us. We stand firm in our resolve to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law in our beloved state.”

PDP wins all seats in Osun LG election

Crisis erupted in Osun State last Monday when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) members were laying claim to local government secretariats across the state.

Police confirmed that six persons lost their lives while many others were injured during the crisis.

The local government election was later held in the state on Saturday, February 22.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), had earlier advised Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke not to proceed with the election.

Fagbemi urged Adeleke to respect the Court of Appeal judgement which restored the APC local government chairmen and councillors sacked in 2022 by the Federal High Court in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.

However, Adeleke, while speaking during a meeting with the delegation of the Civil Society Coalition in Osogbo on Friday, February 21, said the local government election would be held on Saturday.

The governor, on Sunday, inaugurated the local government chairmen and councillors elected during the election.
