The members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, stormed the national secretariat of the Labour Party (LP) in Abuja to protest the party’s national convention slated for the end of this month.
The NLC members also demanded the removal of Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party over alleged plans to hold a “secret” convention without the input of major stakeholders.
The protesters, who were denied entry into the LP secretariat, also accused Abure of planning to destroy the party.
The planned convention has pitched Abure against the NLC and the House of Representatives caucus.
LP slams Reps over party’s convention
The LP had, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, on Monday, March 18, lashed out at its members in the House of Representatives, including the leader of the LP caucus in the House, Afam Ogene, over a statement that it was unconventional for the party to conduct its convention before state, local government, and ward congresses.
The LP said Ogene’s statement that the House of Representatives caucus was not informed about the convention was “a mischief taken too far”.
The party stressed that the House of Representatives through the caucus leader was informed about the party’s forthcoming convention, adding that the LP lawmakers should desist from rushing to the press on party matters.
It noted that the party’s internal matters should remain and kept internal matters.
