NLC, TUC shelve planned strike over naira scarcity

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their planned strike scheduled to commence on Wednesday over the scarcity of naira notes.

The unions made this known at the end of their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Star recalls that NLC, last week, ordered all workers to commence protest at the offices of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) across the country on Wednesday, March 29 over the scarcity of naira notes.

The president of the union, Joe Ajaero, who gave the directive, said the order became imperative following the expiration of a one-week ultimatum given to the CBN to make naira notes available for Nigerians.

However, CBN, on Friday, March 24, directed Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) across the country to open for operation on Saturdays and Sundays to end naira scarcity.

The apex bank said it has evacuated naira notes from its vaults to commercial banks to ease the circulation of banknotes across the country.

It also directed all banks to load their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) as well as conduct physical operations in the banking halls through the weekends.
