Obasanjo’s daughter joins APC, bids for Ogun governorship seat

Former senator representing Ogun Central, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, has ruled out a return to the Senate, declaring that her political ambition is now focused on contesting the Ogun State governorship.

Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, made this known on Saturday during an interview on 103.7FM Eagle7 Sports, where she also confirmed her return to active partisan politics and her recent registration with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

She said she had no interest in serving as a commissioner or seeking another term in the Senate, stressing that her only motivation for re-entering politics is the governorship.

“Moving ahead, I’m not going to be commissioner, and I’m not going back to the Senate,” she said. “The only thing I’ll come back to do is the governorship. And we have started that journey. We are going to see it through. We are very serious and dedicated to it.”

The former Ogun State Commissioner for Health explained that her decision to return to politics followed sustained pressure from supporters who had been mobilising for her comeback.

According to her, a group of loyalists had been organising for about two years before formally approaching her to consider a return to public office.

“They kept saying they believed I was the best candidate and wanted me back,” she added.

Obasanjo recently completed the APC’s e-registration process, formalising her membership of the ruling party at Ibogun Ward 11 in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State. Her registration was confirmed by political associates.

The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party also wished her well following news of her move to the APC.

Her return marks a comeback to frontline politics about 15 years after she left the Senate, where she served from 2007 to 2011.

After her tenure, she relocated to the United States to pursue an academic career.
