Obi vows to celebrate Sallah with Sultan if elected

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to spend the Sallah holiday with the Sultan of Sokoto if elected president in 2027.

Obi made the pledge during an interview with Arise TV, where he criticised President Bola Tinubu for choosing to spend the Sallah break in Lagos.

The former Anambra State governor said he would use religious and cultural occasions to promote national unity by engaging traditional and religious leaders across the country.

“Sallah and everything, he (Tinubu) spends in Lagos. A Muslim. I will go to Sokoto and spend the Sallah with the Sultan and bring everybody together and we will discuss the future. I will go to Kano,” Obi said.

He argued that the presidency should use such occasions to foster greater interaction among Nigerians and encourage discussions on the country’s future.

Obi also spoke about preparations for the 2027 general election, saying the NDC would establish its own election monitoring system to receive results directly from polling units.

According to him, the party plans to transmit polling unit results to a central situation room as part of efforts to strengthen its monitoring of the electoral process.

The NDC candidate also addressed reports surrounding his political relationship with Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obi said he did not reject an offer to serve as Atiku’s running mate for the 2027 election, although he is now seeking the presidency on the NDC platform.
