Former Delta State Governor and vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, has disclosed the reason for dumping the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okowa recently joined the APC alongside his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and other PDP leaders in Delta State.

Speaking at a ceremony to welcome the defectors to the APC in Asaba, the Delta State capital, on Monday, April 28, 2025, Okowa said his decision to join the ruling party was in the best interest of the people of the South-South state.

Okowa said: “Today is a great day for us in Delta State. We defected in the best interest of our people.

“It was not about me or the governor, but the fact that there is a need for us to connect to Abuja. This is a bold, patriotic, and well-intentioned move.”

Also speaking at the event, Oborevwori said his move to the APC was borne out of the desire to get the best for Delta State.

Vice President Shettima, who led the APC delegation at the ceremony, said the defection is a testament to the progressive ideals of Oberevwori and his team in Delta State.

Shettima also described the defection as a tsunami and an unimaginable feat.

“This is a political tsunami of unimaginable proportions that has never happened in the history of the South-South sub-region and the history of Nigeria,” he said.

Others at the event included the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje; Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma; and Senator Adams Oshiomhole; among others.
