Ortom: Obi has capacity to tackle Nigeria’s challenges

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, says the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has the capacity to effectively tackle the economic, security, and other challenges bewildering the country.

Ortom also said Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, “possesses the qualities of a leader who will be a true President of this country by guaranteeing justice, equity, and fairness for all Nigerians.”

The governor said this via a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Terver Akase, in reaction to the endorsement of Obi by former President Olusegun Obasanjo for the 2023 presidency.

Ortom, who commended Obasanjo for endorsing the LP presidential candidate for the number one seat, stated that if he were not a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he would have personally led Obi’s campaign across the country.

The governor stressed that for some years, the country has been tottering on the verge of collapse, “owing to leadership failure and its attendant consequences of poverty, heightened insecurity with banditry, kidnappings, and other acts of terrorism threatening the very foundations of the nation.”

Governor Ortom said the President that Nigeria needs at this challenging time in the country’s history is one who understands the urgent need to unite the people and speedily initiate policies and actions to redirect the ship of the nation on the path of growth and development, noting that Obi has all such qualities.

He further lauded Obasanjo for demonstrating “objectivity, truth, and patriotism as a statesman whose views on national issues must be taken seriously.”

Governor Ortom is one of the aggrieved governors elected on the PDP, known as G-5 or the Integrity Group, who have been at loggerheads with the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over his alleged refusal to prevail on the PDP National Chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, to resign after the former Vice President, a northerner, clinched the presidential ticket of the party.

The aggrieved governors have insisted that it is unfair for the main opposition party to have the national chairman and presidential candidate from the northern region of the country ahead of the 2023 general election, saying Ayu should resign his position for justice, equity, and fairness in the PDP.
