Over 60 killed, many abducted as bandits strike in Niger, Kebbi

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed over 60 people and abducted several others in coordinated attacks on villages across Kebbi and Niger States.

In Kebbi State, the attacks occurred on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, in the Shabanda, Debebe, and Shaffaci areas, leaving at least 40 dead and several homes set ablaze.

Meanwhile, in Niger State, Reuters reported that bandits killed at least 20 people, including security guards, and abducted an unspecified number in villages within the Shiroro Local Government Area of the state.

Residents said the attackers operated for several hours, destroying homes and overwhelming local security personnel.

Many villagers were said to have fled to nearby towns such as Gwada Zumba and Galadima Kogo for safety.

Confirming the incidents, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said gunmen invaded Bagna and Erena villages on Tuesday.

He added that two community guards and a driver were killed, with several others injured during the attacks.
