PDP crisis: Wike, Makinde, Ortom, Ikpeazu in Spain for meeting

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and three of his allies, Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) have left Nigeria for Spain.

It was gathered that the governors left the country for Spain via the International Airport, Omagwa in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State in the early hours of Saturday.

Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, was however left out of the latest trip.

The governors known as G5 have since been calling for the resignation of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Iyorchia Ayu.

The aggrieved governors have insisted that it is unfair for the main opposition party to have the national chairman and presidential candidate from the northern region of the country ahead of the 2023 general election, saying Ayu should resign his position for justice, equity, and fairness in the PDP.

Governor Wike, who spoke to newsmen in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on Friday, said the former Senate President promised to resign if the party’s presidential candidate comes from the North.

“We have not done primary and a man came out and said if the presidential candidate comes from my region (North), I will leave. Honour it. It is integrity and part of the hallmark of leadership.

“If he cannot do that, how can you tell Nigerians that anything the PDP tells you, we would do it?” the governor had said.

Wike and his allies, who maintained that Ayu should step down for a southerner, on September 20, announced their withdrawal from the PDP presidential campaign council.

The governors also boycotted the inauguration of the party’s campaign council held on September 28 in Abuja.

They equally failed to attend the flag-off of the PDP presidential campaign held at the Nest of Champions Stadium in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, on Monday.
