At least two people have been reported killed and several others injured following an alleged aerial attack on Kurgi community in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
Residents said the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, sparking fear and panic across the community and forcing many villagers to flee their homes.
Eyewitnesses revealed that a surveillance helicopter, believed to be operated by the Nigerian Air Force, entered the area and hovered for some time before allegedly firing shots.
According to locals, the gunfire struck residents who were carrying out their daily activities, with women and children said to be among those affected. The sudden shooting reportedly caused confusion as people ran for safety.
Community members confirmed that several residents sustained gunshot injuries, while two victims later died from their wounds.
The incident was said to have triggered a mass displacement, with many residents fleeing Kurgi for neighbouring communities, including Bangi town. As of Tuesday, fear reportedly remained high in the area, with several families yet to return home.
A resident, Sulaiman Sanusi, described the incident as “shocking and unprovoked,” and urged authorities to investigate what happened.
“Innocent people were hit while going about their normal lives,” he said, also calling for urgent medical assistance for those injured.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies had not issued any official statement to confirm or deny involvement in the incident.
