Photos of emaciated kidnap victims spark outrage over insecurity

Shocking images of two kidnapped victims who regained their freedom after spending days in bandits’ captivity have sparked renewed concern over insecurity in Nigeria.

The photos, shared on Facebook by Katsina resident Khaleed Yazeedu on Wednesday, showed the victims severely emaciated after what was described as prolonged abuse and starvation while in captivity.

Security analyst Usman confirmed that the victims regained their freedom after a ransom was paid.

Reacting to the images, Yazeedu described them as a grim reflection of the country’s security challenges and what he called a failure to adequately protect citizens.

“These are not just photographs, they are an indictment of our collective failure and a haunting testimony to the cost of failed governance,” he wrote.

He said no one should return from captivity in such a condition, adding that the victims’ physical state reflected the suffering they endured.

According to him, the greater tragedy lies not only in the actions of the kidnappers but also in the inability of authorities to prevent such incidents or guarantee lasting security for vulnerable communities.

Yazeedu called for justice for the victims and urged the government to prioritise the protection of lives and the dignity of citizens.

The incident has added to growing concerns over persistent kidnappings and the humanitarian impact of bandit attacks across parts of northern Nigeria.
