The Jigawa State Police Command is investigating a case of suspected culpable homicide following the death of a woman allegedly attacked by her brother during a land dispute.
According to the police, the incident occurred on July 1, 2025, in Galadanchi village, Dutse Local Government Area, where a 70-year-old man, Adamu Yakubu, allegedly struck his 45-year-old sister, Hannatu Hashimu, during a heated argument over the sharing of family inheritance land.
What began as a verbal disagreement reportedly escalated into physical violence when the suspect allegedly attacked the victim with a stick.
Police spokesperson, SP Shi’isu Lawan Adam, confirmed in a statement on Friday that the victim left the scene visibly distressed and collapsed shortly after arriving at her matrimonial home. She was rushed to the Dutse General Hospital, where doctors confirmed her dead.
“The suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody assisting with the ongoing investigation. The stick used in the assault was recovered and has been secured as evidence,” the police spokesman said.
The Command condemned the incident and emphasized its commitment to ensuring justice is served.
It also urged residents to seek peaceful and lawful means of resolving disputes, especially those involving family and land matters.
“The suspect will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigations,” the statement added.
The police extended condolences to the bereaved family and reassured the public of their resolve to uphold justice and maintain peace in the state.
