Police arrest Inspector for extorting woman in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command says it has detained an Inspector for orderly room trial, over alleged assault and extortion of a woman at a checkpoint in Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

Odutola noted that the decisive action was taken by the police authority in the state following a complaint lodged by a 24-year-old woman, Funmilola Soyemi, on January 13, which led to a thorough investigation conducted by the Ogun State Criminal Investigation Department.

The police spokesperson stated that the investigation confirmed the officer’s misconduct, including tracing the account number into which the money extorted was deposited.

Odutola added that the money had been recovered and marked as an exhibit.

“The commissioner also emphasised the importance of respecting fundamental human rights of citizens at different lectures conducted for officers and men of the command.

“The family of the complainant has been contacted and is in communication with the Commissioner of Police who has assured that officers will be held responsible for their failure to act in accordance with the rules of the force.”

Odutola noted that the outcome of the orderly room proceedings would be made public as soon as the investigation was concluded.
