The singer’s death became public knowledge on Sunday after videos showing his remains being taken to a mortuary circulated on social media, triggering widespread grief and speculation about the cause of death.
In one of the videos, Destiny Boy was seen lying in the back of a vehicle with cotton wool placed in his nostrils and ears.
The development prompted various reactions online, with many calling for clarification.
Subsequently, an unidentified associate of the late singer released another video, stating that Destiny Boy had been battling a private health condition before his death.
“Before people start saying rubbish about his death, Destiny was dealing with a health issue. We tried our best, but he didn’t make it. May God rest his soul,” the associate said.
Born Afeez Adeshina, Destiny Boy began his music career at a young age and was known for his unique Fuji-inspired sound.
He started out at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, Lagos, where he worked as a backup dancer for Fuji star Pasuma.
He gained widespread attention in 2019 after releasing a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song If, which went viral on social media. He also released covers of songs by Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice and Small Doctor.
His discography includes songs such as Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan and Lowkey.
Destiny Boy is survived by his partner, Iremide, and their child, born in November 2024.
The police said further updates would be provided as investigations continue.
