Police arrest suspect over explosion in Owo

Police in Ondo State have arrested a suspect in connection with a loud explosion that sent residents fleeing in panic on Saturday in Owo Local Government Area.

The incident occurred near a commercial bank, where the explosion reportedly caused thick smoke and forced traders to close their shops temporarily.

Residents and passersby ran for safety as the sudden blast disrupted the normally busy area.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed that the explosion was caused by a banger.

In a statement on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, Olusola Ayanlade, identified the arrested suspect as Ayoola Daniel Ojumu of Owo, who has confessed to his role in the incident.

Ayanlade added that the suspect’s accomplice, who reportedly set off the explosive, is still at large, with ongoing efforts to apprehend them.

He warned that the police would not tolerate any breach of security, especially with the yuletide season approaching, urging parents and guardians to monitor their wards closely.

“Members of the public are advised to remain calm, vigilant, and report any security threats to the police.

“The suspect in custody will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation,” the statement added.

The police emphasized that timely information from residents is crucial to maintaining community safety and preventing similar incidents in the future.
