Police arrest two dismissed soldiers for armed robbery in Ibadan

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspected armed robbers and recovered several stolen vehicles in Ibadan following an intelligence-led operation.

The suspects, identified as David Okhaie, 48, and Balogun Afolabi, 43, are dismissed corporals of the Nigerian Army who allegedly impersonated serving military officers to carry out armed robberies targeting motorists.

Operatives of the Command Monitoring Unit apprehended the men after receiving credible intelligence that prompted an intensive search across the Ibadan metropolis. Investigations revealed that the suspects dispossessed victims of their vehicles at gunpoint, causing fear and disrupting public peace in the state.

During the operation, police recovered a black Toyota Camry (KRD 253 KC), a metallic Toyota Corolla (JTA 938 AA), a silver Lexus RX 350 (unregistered), and a black Super Cargo motorcycle (YRE 487 VD). The public has been urged to report to the Command with valid proof of ownership if they recognize any of the recovered vehicles.

Police confirmed that the suspects have confessed to the crimes and are cooperating with investigators to dismantle a wider criminal network and recover additional stolen property.

Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, commended the officers for their professionalism, describing the operation as a testament to intelligence-driven policing.

“This successful operation underscores our commitment to protecting lives and property. I commend the gallantry and professionalism of the operatives of the Command Monitoring Unit,” he said, adding that the support of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has strengthened proactive policing nationwide.

CP Haruna urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to the police, stressing that public cooperation is crucial in the fight against crime.

He also advised citizens to report emergencies through the Command’s toll-free response line or control room numbers.
