The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed that suspected political thugs attacked vehicles during a governorship candidate affirmation event of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
Police spokesperson Nafiu Habib said the incident occurred as officers were managing crowd control at the venue. According to him, the attackers arrived on motorcycles, vandalised several vehicles parked outside, and fled before they could be apprehended.
He noted that investigations had commenced, adding that the command would not tolerate political violence or any threat to public order.
The police confirmation follows allegations by a PDP faction linked to National Chairman Abdurrahman Muhammad and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, which claimed that thugs disrupted the event and damaged party property.
A party official, Muhammad Sabo, said three hoodlums smashed windscreens and side glasses of about five vehicles before escaping. He added that another group later attacked the party secretariat and destroyed billboards after the programme.
The faction condemned the attacks, warning that such incidents could heighten political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections. It also called on Governor Bala Mohammed to ensure a peaceful environment for all parties.
A formal complaint has been lodged with the police, while the faction reaffirmed Usman Supi as its governorship candidate in Bauchi State.
